Cheesy Garlic bread sticks are always kids favourite:) These garlic bread sticks are made with whole wheat flour and they are always great for a weekend dinner along with a soup. Also these are soft enough for the toddlers to munch on :)
Soft & Cheesy!! |
Ingredients:
For Dough:
- Whole wheat flour / Atta - 2 cups
- Instant yeast - 1 1/2 tsp
- Salt - 1/2 Tbsp
- Sugar - 1 Tbsp
- Olive oil - 1 Tbsp
- Warm water - 3/4 to 1 cup (adjust as required)
For Garlic Butter:
- Butter, softened - 2 to 3 Tbsp
- Garlic, finely grated / minced - 2 Tbsp
- Italian seasoning - 1 tsp
- Mozzarella cheese, grated - 1/2 to 3/4 cup (use as needed)
- Olive oil (if needed)
- Garlic powder (Optional)
Optional:
- Chilli flakes
Method:
- Measure up the whole wheat flour and sift it into a wide bowl. While using the whole wheat flour in baking, please ensure to sift the flour at least 4 to 5 times before adding the liquid ingredients. This will make the flour lighter and will give a lighter and fluffier product
- Yeast Proofing: Since I have used Instant yeast here, I didn't proofed it and added directly to the flour. Before you bake with active dry yeast or fresh yeast, you must test it first to make sure the yeast is alive. The act of testing to see if yeast is alive is called proofing. In 1/2 cup of warm water, add the sugar and mix well. Then add the yeast, give a gentle mix and leave it for few mins. After 5 or 10 minutes, the yeast should begin to form a creamy foam on the surface of the water. That foam means the yeast is alive. You can now proceed to combine the yeast mixture with the flour and other dry ingredients in your recipe. If there is no foam, the yeast is dead and you should start over with a new packet of yeast
- In a wide bowl, add the well sifted flour, yeast, sugar and salt; Mix them well
- Add 3/4 cup of warm water and mix them together to form a dough. Then add the olive oil and knead well. If needed add more warm water and knead to make a smooth soft dough. Initially it would be sticky, keep on kneading until it becomes smooth dough. If we add more dry flour, it would become hard after baking
- Cover and rest the dough for 1 to 2 hours in a warm place until it rise / doubles in size
- Once it got risen, pre-heat the oven at 350 F for 10 mins and start preparing the garlic butter spread
- Take the risen dough, punch it, roll it onto a baking tray. Here I rolled it thin, you can adjust as per your preference
- Cover and rest it for few mins
- Garlic Butter spread: In a small bowl add the softened butter, finely grated garlic and Italian seasoning; mix well. I have added 1/2 tsp of garlic powder too. To this add the grated cheese and mix together. If it's not much spreadable, we can add 1 or 2 tsp of olive oil and mix together.
- Using a spatula, spread the garlic butter spread on the rolled dough
- Bake it in the preheated oven for 10-15 mins until the cheese get melted and becomes golden
- Once done, take it off and allow it to cool for few mins
- Using sharp knife, cut them into strips
- If we want spicy, sprinkle chilly flakes and enjoy! Serve warm along with a soup
